Mini SD Memory Guide
The Mini Secure Digital card (miniSD) is a small, removable, and portable memory card for small electronic gadgets like cellular phones, digital cameras, MP3 players and other small electronics. The miniSD card was first announced in 2003 by SanDisk. They are usually packaged with an adapter to allow them to be used in a full sized Secure Digital slot. The MiniSD card is made by many different manufacturers, and available in a variety of brands. These are all universally compatible.
MiniSD cards measure 21.5mm x 20mm x 1.4mm. It weighs approximately 1 gram, and operates at a voltage of 2.7 - 3.6 V. MiniSD cards are currently available in capacities ranging from 16 MB to 8 GB. the the MiniSDHC version of this card comes in capacities ranging from 4 GB to 8 GB. The miniSD is only 37% of the volume of a full size SD card, but it has most of the benefits of the full size card including copyright protection. However, the full size card has a write protection switch, and the miniSD does not.
The MicroSD and the MiniSD are commonly confused. The microSD card is a similar smaller card. MicroSD cards can be used in MiniSD devices with the use of an adapter, but because the MiniSD cards is larger than the MicroSD, a MiniSD card cannot be used in the MicroSD slot. The MiniSD card was the smallest removable flash card when it was first introduced, now the smaller micro SD is. A microSD card is half the weight as the MiniSD card, and measures 15mm x 11mm x 0.7mm.
