MMC Micro Memory Guide
The MMCmicro is a smaller version of the original MMC (MultiMediaCard). Measuring in at 14mm x 12mm x 1.1mm, it is smaller and thinner than the RS-MMC (Reduced-Size MultiMediaCard). It supports dual voltage like MMCmobile and MMCPlus. Small removable flash memory cards such as this are usually used to expand the memory in cellular phones. The dual-voltage setting is especially important for flash memory cards meant to be used in devices such as cellular telephones, because operating at a higher voltage will use more power and cause the the devices battery to drain faster.
The MMCmicro is very similar to the MicroSD card however since the two have incompatible pinouts the formats are not physically compatible. The card can, however, be used in a full sized SD or MMC slot with the use of an adapter. The card is available in sizes from 16 MB to 2 GB, and has a transfer speed of up to 10Mbps, with a write speed of up to 7Mbps. The Dual voltage setting allows for operating voltages of 1.8 and 3.3 volts.
The MMCmicro was first introduced by Samsung in 2004, then called the S-card. It was later adapted by the MMCA (MultiMediaCard Association) and re-introduced in 2005 as the MMCMicro, the third form factor memory card in the Multimedia Card family. MMCmicro cards are widely used in Samsung camera phones to expand memory and store photos. The ability to place the card in an adapter and place it in an SD slot makes it compatible with many PCs, so pictures can be transfered easily from the camera phone to the PC.
